Drone Tech Startups complete a Accelerator Programme
FOUNDERS JOURNEY SINCE THEDroneTech Innovation Pitching Challenge
Highlight #1 – Drone Tech Startups complete the Investment Readiness Accelerator Programme.
In 2021 we collaborated with the RIIS – Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability and hosted the Drone Tech Showcase pitching event. Four businesses were selected to go through an acceleration programme in partnership with the SA Innovation Summit through the TechTribe Accelerator. The Tech-tribe Acceleration Programme started in February this year and culminated on the 25th of August with a graduation and Demo Day event. This was a celebration, and an opportunity for the founders to pitch their businesses to investors to raise capital to help build the next set of entrepreneurs across South Africa.
Here’s a summary of the companies and feedback from the founders about the programme and where they are now:
RBI Drone Tech
“ Since the pitch event we have already embarked on a Telecoms inspection project and have been hard at work utilizing our concept in the field, so far it has only provided us with good results and the client is very happy with the work done so far.
The accelerator program has been extremely helpful in teaching us the dynamics of a business and how to get yourself ready for any kind of investors and well as run a fully functional company.
We would highly advise any start-up to take the course as well because they will learn so much from it” Armandt du Toit
WiPo Wireless Power
“The event allowed us to collaborate with like-minded entrepreneurs, provided needed exposure for our company on the International stage at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, and allowed us to participate in the Aerospace incubation programme, all of which provided insights from mentors and investors alike. We would recommend the Drone Tech pitching event to any drone Startup across Africa” Jaco du Preez
“Being part of the Drone Tech pitching event and subsequently being chosen to participate in the Tech-Tribe Accelerator Programme, has both given me the confidence in the company’s idea / vision and provided the tools for growth. It was a journey that was not travelled alone, but rather with a partner that both lead by example and guided the future of the company” Garreth Grosch

Highlight #2 – The SBIC continues to actively support drone technology in South Africa.
The SBIC, in collaboration with RIIS and the Burooj Institute conducted a study that was funded by the FCDO, the development arm of the UK Government, to look at assessing the drone ecosystem for South Africa and Kenya, specifically with the intent of how to lock opportunities. Through intensive stakeholder engagement, we found that there is a big need and drive towards creating a drone corridor in South Africa in the long run. In the short term, the need for a sandbox came out. The sand box would create a space for the industry to innovate.
Last year, the WCG did a study that looked to support the drone industry and how a sand box would look like. It came out that creating a sandbox is quite a complex process. Right now, the SBIC in collaboration with stakeholders will be working on establishing a drone corridor. Saldanha Bay has been earmarked as the suitable location for this sand box. We are looking forward to sharing more updates on this work as we continue to engage with the different stakeholders for collaboration.
